Multiple winter clothing drives active across Champaign County

As temperatures continue to drop, organizations across Champaign County have launched a series of winter clothing drives to help keep local families warm. Three separate efforts—each already underway—are calling on community members to donate coats, hats, gloves, and other cold-weather essentials. Together, these drives highlight a growing commitment to helping neighbors prepare for the harshest stretch of the season.

The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Champaign County Young Professionals, is leading one of the largest initiatives with its Kids Winter Clothing Drive. The drive is focused on collecting winter gear specifically for children, including scarves, gloves, hats, and coats. Donations can be dropped off at the Chamber office on West Court Street or at F&M Bank on North Main Street in Urbana. The collection continues through December 5, giving residents just over a week to make contributions.

Another significant collection effort is taking place through Hearth & Home of Urbana, which is hosting a Winter Coat Drive to benefit The Caring Kitchen. The drive is accepting both new and gently used coats, gloves, and winter hats, and will continue gathering items through December 22. Donations may be dropped off at Hearth & Home’s location on East State Route 29, and organizers encourage residents to participate early to help meet ongoing needs as winter approaches.

In St. Paris, Christmas in the Village and The Local Pair Market are collaborating on a community-centered Hat & Glove Drive that will operate throughout the winter season. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Unlike many drives that rely solely on donations, this effort includes a giving model that encourages both generosity and accessibility. Hats and gloves are available for pickup inside The Local Pair Market during regular business hours, with no questions asked. A “Giving Tree” placed outside the shop also offers items for anyone who needs them, provided the weather cooperates. Meanwhile, donations of new hats, gloves, and mittens will be accepted all season long, ensuring the supply remains steady as the months grow colder.

With three ongoing clothing drives operating simultaneously, Champaign County residents have multiple opportunities to support their community. Each initiative offers its own unique approach, but all share the same goal: ensuring that children and families have the warm clothing they need to face the winter months safely and comfortably.

For those looking to give back, organizers encourage early donations to help stock up before the coldest weather arrives. Whether through a coat, a pair of gloves, or a simple scarf, each contribution plays a meaningful role in helping neighbors stay warm this season.
