Manager JD Harshfield explains the history of Ohio Caverns to the present day:
In 2012, two new tours were opened to the public.
During the summer (May-September 30), there are three options for tours available.
There is a Natural Wonder Tour that focuses on the geology, a Historic Tour that focuses on the history, and a Limestone Tour for those with limited mobility and is available by reservation only.
During the winter (October 1-April 30), there is a Winter Tour. It covers parts of the Natural Wonder and Historic areas.
The Natural Wonders, Historic, and Winter Tours take about one hour and are daily.
The Crystal King is the largest stalactite in Ohio. It’s under 5 feet tall, 400 pounds, and currently over 200,000 years old at its current growth rate. The Crystal King is well-known because it’s uncommonly pure white and has a perfect shape.
The giftshop is the largest rock shop in the State of Ohio and has the largest selection of Amethyst.
Gem mining is an activity where people can buy bags of rocks and minerals from all over the world at the giftshop. At the gem mining station, the sand and dirt is sifted out, and then guests can take home the rocks in the bag.
Family tradition visits are very popular among guests.

Ohio Caverns is open year-round and only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
The caverns are on a 35-acre park and the park is open every day for people to visit or picnic. There are two shelter pavilions that can be used, along with a playground.
The caverns are a very stable and consistent 54-degree environment.

Ohio Caverns is open May 1-September 30 from 9 am-5 pm. From October 1-April 30, the caverns are open from 10 am-4pm.
