A single vehicle crash temporarily shut down U.S. 33 early Tuesday morning in Lakeview, shortly after 3:15 AM.

According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, a 2020 Hyundai Tucson driven by 20-year-old Cornell Gillis of St. Marys went off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence, and continued into a ravine.

Deputies say Gillis told investigators he was beginning to fall asleep and nearly rear-ended a semi in front of him.

He swerved to avoid a collision, causing the SUV to leave the roadway.

Traffic on U.S. 33 was closed for nearly two hours while crews worked to remove the vehicle from the ravine.

Gillis was not injured.

The Hyundai sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Gillis was cited for failure to control.
