New Laws in Ohio for 2025

As we start the new year, Ohio residents will see a couple of changes in the law, with two key updates going into effect on January 1, 2025.

Ohio’s Minimum Wage Increase
Due to a constitutional amendment passed by Ohio voters in 2006, Ohio’s minimum wage will rise again, adjusting to inflation. Non-tipped employees at businesses with more than $394,000 in annual gross receipts will see their hourly wage increase from $10.45 to $10.70. Tipped employees will see their hourly rate rise from $5.25 to $5.35.

Religious Expression Days for Students
Under the new Religious Expression Days (R.E.D.) Act, K-12 students can now be absent from school for up to three days each year without academic penalty, for religious or spiritual reasons. The absence can be used to observe religious holidays or participate in activities under the auspices of a religious organization. While principals cannot question the sincerity of the student’s beliefs, they can verify the reason with the student’s parents or guardians.

Upcoming Laws for Later in 2025

  • Bathroom Bill (Feb. 25, 2025): This law prohibits Ohio students from using restrooms that do not align with their sex assigned at birth.
  • Cellphones in Schools (July 2025): Schools will be required to develop guidelines regarding cellphone use during school hours before the 2025-26 school year.
