ODNR accepting applications for controlled hunts

SHARE NOW

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife is now accepting applications for public land controlled hunts for the 2025-26 hunting season. Interested hunters have until Thursday, July 31, to apply.

These controlled hunts offer unique opportunities to pursue species such as deer, waterfowl, dove, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, and bobwhite quail on select public lands across Ohio.

The hunts are designed for adults, youth, mobility-impaired individuals, and mentors with apprentices, and may include both firearm and archery options, depending on the species and location.

The Division of Wildlife, along with the Division of Parks & Watercraft, hosts these special hunts at wildlife areas, state parks, and other public properties.

Several new hunting properties will be available this year, including Caesar Creek, Killbuck Marsh, Shreve Lake, Tranquility, and Wolf Creek wildlife areas, plus Wood County Wildlife Area 5.

How to Apply

Hunters can apply through the Ohio Wildlife Licensing System online or by calling 1-866-703-1928.

Each controlled hunt requires an application fee, and applicants may apply for multiple hunts—however, only one entry is allowed per hunt.

Applicants must have a valid Ohio hunting license, and deer hunters must also have a valid deer permit.

Youth applicants must be under age 18 at the time of the hunt, and adults must be at least 18 at the time of application.

Deer management permits may be used during controlled deer hunts and are valid statewide through December 21, 2025.

Ring-necked pheasant hunts will again be permit-only in select areas.

What to Expect

Applicants are randomly selected through a lottery.

Successful hunters will be notified shortly after the application period closes and will receive details including permits, rules, and area maps.

All participants should review site-specific information carefully before applying. Permits cannot be sold, exchanged, or transferred for compensation.
