On Wednesday evening, Urbana Police officers made a group of young athletes’ day by stopping to join an impromptu game of football in the neighborhood.
While on patrol, the officers came across a group of freshman athletes tossing the ball on the corner of Henry Street and South Kenton.
Deciding to take a short break from duty, the officers jumped in, keeping up with the teens as they navigated the obstacles of a sidewalk step, an electric pole, and the usual challenges of age.
The playful moment quickly drew the attention of six younger neighborhood children, who watched from the curb, and bystanders shared the heartwarming scene on social media, spreading it through the community.
The participating teens were Dexyn Yohey, Mekhi Peterson, Tate Lantz, Bentley Cordial, and Jackson Stacy.
The officers were Ely Louck, Tristen Ruef, and Lance Turner Jr.
(By the way, the kids won 6-5!)
The friendly encounter highlighted the community connection officers aim to foster, showing that sometimes a little fun can make a big impact.
