Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose yesterday applauded the Supreme Court of Ohio’s ruling on the legality and accuracy of the Ballot Board’s summary of State Issue 1. The court’s decision affirms that the summary, which voters will see on their ballots, provides a truthful representation of the proposed amendment’s impact.

In a statement issued following the court’s ruling, LaRose described the decision as a significant victory for Ohio voters. “This decision is a huge win for Ohio voters, who deserve an honest explanation of what they’re being asked to decide,” LaRose said. He emphasized that the court’s opinion confirms the proposed amendment would indeed necessitate the redrawing, or gerrymandering, of Ohio’s legislative and congressional districts—something he claims has been misrepresented by proponents of the amendment.

The Secretary of State criticized what he described as misleading tactics by supporters of the amendment, including attempts to downplay the extent of district gerrymandering involved. Despite acknowledging that the ruling might not fully curb misleading advertising, LaRose expressed confidence that the court’s intervention would ensure voters are informed by an accurate ballot summary.

The Supreme Court’s decision required some minor revisions to the summary. LaRose announced that the Ballot Board will reconvene to make these adjustments, with a meeting scheduled for Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m.

State Issue 1 has been a contentious topic, with significant debate surrounding its implications for Ohio’s electoral districts and overall voting process. As the election approaches, the clarity of the ballot summary will be crucial for voters seeking to make informed decisions.
