OHP BOE Catches Academic Showcase at Meeting; Approves Calendar

The Ohio Hi-Point Board of Education met in a regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday evening.

Board members participated in an Academic Showcase. The showcase highlighted the center’s academic programs. Students from four subjects, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math, did a short presentation for board members and highlighted some topics they are currently learning. Students from home schools of Indian Lake, Bellefontaine, Marysville, Urbana & Riverside participated. Superintendent Dr. Rick Smith explains more:

 

The March 2023 Main Campus Students of the Month are Grace Barrett, Graphic Media Arts, Bellefontaine High School, and Mary Flowers, Cosmetology, Urbana High School.

The March 2023 High School Staff Member of the Month is Hannah McKinney, Social Studies Instructor.

The board entered into internship agreements with Baker’s Excavating & Construction of Cable, Chick-fil-A of Springfield, Iron City Sports Bar of Bellefontaine, Lobdell’s Mobile Mechanics of West Liberty, Main Metal Products of West Liberty, and YMCA Flight Program of St. Paris.

An uncompensated FMLA leave was approved for Kaitlyn Karam. Karam is an English Instructor. Her leave began March 21st and she will not return to school until the fall.

The board approved employment for the following certified staff, pending receipt of BCI/FBI official documentation, transcripts, licensure, and employment verification:    Mary Perry, of Woodstock, as an Agriculture Instructor for July 1, 2023 –June 30, 2024, with a one year contract, Kyle Rose, of Marysville, as a Science Instructor for July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024, with a one year contract, and Matthew Roth, of Findlay, as an Agriculture Instructor for July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024, with a one year contract.

Approval of employment for extended days for the 2023/2024 school year for Mary Perry for 10 days, Kyle Rose for 5 days, and Matthew Roth for 20 days was next on the agenda.

Several real estate property tax exemptions were discussed by the board. They approved the Cobblestone Hotel real property tax exemption as presented and approved by the Bellefontaine City School Board of Education, the Cobblestone Hotel real property tax exemption as presented and approved by the Indian Lake Local School Board of Education, and then approved the Robinson Fin real property tax exemption as presented and approved by the Kenton City School Board of Education.

A donation of a 1996 Dodge Ram van to be used in the Automotive Technology lab at OHP from Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Bellefontaine, with an estimated value of $2,659, was approved by the board of education.

A donation of $500 was made to the BOE to be used for free and reduced lunch for qualified students to eat at food trucks, from Phil and Laurie Showalter of Bellefontaine.

A $350 Staff Wellness Stipend for Ashley Cook, who is currently on an unpaid leave of absence, and has achieved 33 of 35 required points prior to the start of her unpaid leave, and the remainder during her unpaid leave was approved.

Several stipends were approved for the 2023/2024 School Year. CTE Summer Camp Instructors will receive $30/hour for a maximum of 5 hours per day, Academic Summer School Instructors will receive $30/hour for a maximum of 5 hours per day. The hours that will be paid will include: developing lesson plans, grading assignments, and teaching. Stipends will be paid with GEER II grant funds. A summer work-based placement stipend was also approved for Tamara Cooper, June-July 2023, for a one-time cost of $1,500. This stipend will also be paid with GEER II grant funds.

The school calendars for 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 were approved. The 2023/2024 calendar includes up to five calamity days. Those days will be able to be made up on January 15, 2024, & February 19, 2024/January 20, 2025, & February 17, 2025, and at the end of both school years.
