A West Liberty man was arrested early Friday morning after a traffic stop in Bellefontaine led to an OVI investigation.

According to Bellefontaine Police, officers were on patrol late Thursday night, just before midnight, when they spotted a sedan traveling south on South Main Street near Lincoln Avenue with a broken passenger-side headlight.

Officers also noticed the vehicle appeared to have been in a previous crash and was speeding.

Police followed the car and paced it, traveling between 45 and 50 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone.

The driver was also seen drifting within his lane and changing lanes without using a turn signal.

The vehicle was stopped near the intersection of South Main Street and Augusta Drive.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old James Loffling, was the only person in the car.

Loffling admitted he had been drinking earlier in the evening and also said he had used marijuana.

Police noted that Loffling showed signs of impairment and then failed several field sobriety tests.

A search of the vehicle turned up several open containers of alcohol on the passenger-side floorboard and an empty liquor bottle in the back seat.

Loffling was arrested for operating a vehicle impaired (OVI) and taken to the Logan County Jail.

He agreed to a breath test, which showed a blood alcohol level of .177 — more than twice the legal limit.

Loffling was issued a traffic citation and is scheduled to appear in Bellefontaine Municipal Court on Monday.
