OSHP investigating fatal Champaign County crash

The Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that happened late Monday in Champaign County.

The crash happened shortly after 10:00 PM on Runkle Road, east of the intersection with Slack Road.

According to troopers, a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country driven by 73-year-old Eldon Luttrell of Saint Paris was traveling eastbound when it went off the south side of the roadway.

The van struck a utility pole, continued into a cornfield, and came to rest in a nearby pond.

The vehicle was removed from the pond by mechanical means.

Luttrell succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, the Christiansburg Fire Company, the JSP Fire District, and Wooten Automotive & Towing.
