UPDATE:
In an unfolding situation Wednesday morning, Roland Hoge, an 85-year-old Bellefontaine resident, was hospitalized after his vehicle crashed on Beech Avenue. The incident began around 10:15 AM when Bellefontaine EMS arrived on the scene and found Hoge, who was unconscious but breathing.
Initial assessments by emergency responders indicated that Hoge’s blood sugar levels were normal. Despite these findings, Hoge was removed from his vehicle and transported to Mary Rutan Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later airlifted to Grant Hospital for further treatment.
Investigations into the crash revealed that the truck’s accelerator was functioning properly, and the speedometer was not stuck at a high speed. There were no signs of impact on the front windshield, suggesting that Hoge did not suffer a head injury during the crash.
Surveillance footage from Mary Rutan Hospital showed Hoge’s truck traveling northbound on North Madriver Street shortly before the crash. The footage indicated that Hoge appeared to be driving normally at regular speeds, but it did not capture the moment of the crash itself.
A follow-up with Hoge’s son revealed that Roland was driving to the hospital to seek treatment for a hand injury sustained from a saw. Doug speculated that his father might have lost consciousness while driving, leading to the crash.
The Hogue family reports that Roland is set to be released from the hospital today.
