Two men from Piqua were stopped at the Walmart parking lot on U.S. 68 South in Bellefontaine on the evening of April 7, 2026, after a welfare check led to the discovery of suspected cocaine and the arrest of the driver.
Just before 6:51 p.m., officers were dispatched to Walmart after receiving a report about two males sitting in a red Cadillac parked away from other vehicles. When officers approached the vehicle, they noticed the occupants moving around in the front seats before they sat still.
The driver, 62‑year‑old Keith Lance of Piqua, provided his driver’s license, while the passenger, 25‑year‑old James Myers of Piqua, stated he did not have a license but gave his identifying information. Officers also observed Myers nervously handling a backpack during the initial contact.
Because of the behavior and backpack movement, a K9 unit was requested to assist. After both men exited the vehicle and were patted down for safety — during which a pocket knife was removed from Myers — the K9 alerted to the driver’s side area of the car.
A post‑alert search of the vehicle uncovered a white powdery substance on the driver’s seat that field‑tested positive for cocaine. A subsequent search of Lance’s clothing also produced a similar substance that tested positive for cocaine.
Lance was arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and taken to the Logan County Jail. The vehicle was towed and processed as part of the investigation.
No additional charges have been announced at this time.
