The Logan County Board of Elections will hold a hearing this Wednesday, at 8:30 a.m., to consider a formal protest filed against Ben Stahler’s petition to run as an independent candidate for Bellefontaine City Council President.
The protest was filed by Bellefontaine resident Bernard Iven, who argues that Stahler is not eligible to run as an independent due to his long-standing and recent affiliations with political parties—primarily the Republican Party.
In his complaint, Iven cites Stahler’s recent participation in Republican primaries, attendance at Republican events, and past listings on ballots as a Republican or Democrat.
He also points to Stahler’s history of holding public office under partisan affiliations, including serving as Mayor of Bellefontaine and chair of the Logan County Democratic Central Committee.
Ohio election law requires that independent candidates not be affiliated with a political party, and that their claims of independence be made in good faith.
Iven’s filing contends that Stahler’s political history and activity suggest otherwise.
The Board of Elections will review the complaint and determine whether Stahler can remain on the ballot as an independent in the upcoming election.
