A Bellefontaine man is facing OVI and open container charges following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Sandusky Avenue and Madriver Street.
According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, officers responded to the crash and identified the driver of an SUV as 66-year-old Kevin Johnson.
Police say Johnson’s SUV ran a red light and was struck by a semi-truck.
Neither driver reported needing medical attention.
Officers did notice Johnson had bleeding on his knuckles, and Bellefontaine EMS provided bandages.
During the crash investigation, EMS personnel reported detecting an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Johnson.
Police say Johnson also attempted to light a cigarette near gas pumps twice, despite being told not to because of the danger posed by the fuel.
Officers asked Johnson to perform standardized field sobriety tests, but police say he declined.
When asked how much alcohol he had consumed, Johnson reportedly told officers he had three beers about two hours earlier.
He identified the beer as Coors but declined to say where he had been drinking.
Based on the odor of alcohol, Johnson’s admission, his refusal to perform field sobriety tests, and the circumstances surrounding the crash, officers arrested him for operating a vehicle while impaired.
At the police department, Johnson also declined to take a breath test after being advised of the consequences of refusing.
Police later found an open can of Natural Ice beer in the center console of Johnson’s vehicle during an inventory.
Johnson was cited for OVI and failing to obey a red traffic signal, which police say caused the crash.
He was also issued a summons for an open container violation.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in Bellefontaine Municipal Court on August 17 at 9 a.m.
He was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he was booked on charges of OVI and open container.
