Remembering Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice

People all around the United States observed a moment of silence on Memorial Day to remember and honor those who gave their lives for our freedom:

Locally we remembered:

  • Kevin Smith gave his life in Iraq on March 21, 2005. He passed away when a car bomb exploded.
  • Also in Iraq, Jeremy Hodge made the ultimate sacrifice on October 10, 2005. He grew up in the Rushsylvania area and attended Ridgemont Schools. He was a member of the Ohio National Guard, serving the 612th Engineer Batallion. Less than one year after being deployed to Iraq Hodge became the first Logan County soldier to make the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was leading a convoy when a roadside bomb exploded and cost him his life.
  • Dennis Hansen passed away in Afghanistan on December 3, 2009. Hansen grew up in the Indian Lake area, graduated from Indian Lake High School, and was a member of the US Marine Corps and the US Army. Hansen’s unit was attacked by insurgents, and he suffered fatal injuries from an IED blast.
  • David Spicer served as a Marine in Afghanistan and died on July 13, 2009. He grew up in Zanesfield and graduated from Benjamin Logan High School.

Congressman Jim Jordan spoke in Lakeview:

Thank you to Gary Kauffman and Louise Norris for the photos from around the area.
