The Logan County Republican Party gathered for their monthly luncheon Monday at noon, where they were joined by guest speaker Kris Myers, Superintendent of the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District.

Myers provided an overview of the city’s current parks initiatives and future plans as outlined in the department’s Master Plan.

Bellefontaine is home to 16 city parks, along with the scenic Myerrah Nature Preserve located approximately four miles outside the city.

Myers highlighted several ongoing and upcoming projects for the city.

Among the current upgrades, restrooms at Ratleff Park and Mary Rutan Park are undergoing renovations and are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

One of the more anticipated improvements is the pickleball court expansion at Mary Rutan Park, which will bring the total number of courts to eight by the end of June, reflecting growing community interest in the sport.

“I was surprised to find that the majority of park users fall in the 15 to 23 age group,” Myers noted, pointing to a strong youth and young adult presence in outdoor spaces.

Additional projects include:

  • Paving upgrades at Southview Park
  • A security camera installation at Mary Rutan Park to enhance safety
  • A complete overhaul of Harmon Park, aimed at revitalizing the aging facility

Myers explains some of the exciting projects, and one that is on the horizon:

Myers has been with the district for 21 years, and said, “We have an amazing team with lots of irons in the fire. I am so proud of our staff!”
