Riverside High School held its 3rd Biannual Men’s Junior/Senior Retreat on September 18th at Winner Harvest Barn and Family Farm, bringing together 11th and 12th-grade male students for a day of inspiration and personal growth. The retreat, initiated in 2020 by Dr. Scott Mann, the school Superintendent, aims to empower young men to overcome life’s challenges and foster mental health.
This year, attendees were inspired by former U.S. Army Major Ryan Tackett, who delivered a compelling speech titled “Becoming a Well-Driven Nail.” Tackett emphasized the importance of integrity, encouraging students to open their hearts and set aside their egos. Engaging the students in a physical challenge, Tackett organized a push-up contest, skillfully demonstrated with a nail-hammering activity, and a vote to identify a peer who exemplified integrity. Senior Jorden Dunham was honored with a Husky hammer, symbolizing that character is more valuable than physical strength or skill.
Following Tackett’s address, students participated in outdoor activities, including the Battle Light Challenge and Archery Tag, fostering teamwork and camaraderie.
The retreat featured several more speakers, including attorney Jeff Teeters, who shared insights on overcoming mistakes and the importance of resilience in the face of grief and loss. He urged students to define their own success rather than allowing others to shape their paths. Business owner Brian Hodges echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that personal limits should be self-defined.
Dr. Mann reinforced the message of accountability, encouraging students to take charge of their circumstances and to recognize the lessons learned from failure.
After a hearty lunch catered by Davis Meats and City Sweets & Creamery, students enjoyed additional team-building activities. The day concluded with a poignant talk by Jeff Pinkleton, Executive Director, and Founder at The Gathering of the Miami Valley. He discussed the impact of words and the balance of positive and negative interactions in life, highlighting the importance of community and support.
Riverside High School expresses gratitude to all the speakers for their contributions and thanks Main Street Signs for providing the retreat shirts. This enriching event continues to be a cornerstone in developing the values of integrity and resilience among young men in the community.
