This summer, North Main Street in Urbana between the intersection of Washington Avenue/Gwynne Street and the northern corporate limits of the city is slated for improvements as part of several planned construction projects.
These projects include the replacement of curb and gutter and related concrete flatwork between Washington Avenue/Gwynne Street and Dellinger Road; bike trail safety improvements at the Simon Kenton Trail crossing near the railroad tracks, and the resurfacing of North Main Street in Urbana from Washington Avenue/Gwynne Street to the northern corporation limits.
As early as Monday, May 12, 2025, D.L. Smith Concrete, LLC is anticipated to start the planned curb and gutter replacement and related concrete flatwork between Washington Avenue/Gwynne Street and Dellinger Road in advance of asphalt resurfacing work, with completion on or before Friday, July 11, 2025.
In addition to the planned work on North Main Street, this concrete contractor will be replacing deteriorated or missing sidewalks and curb sections along at least portions of Abbey Lane, South Walnut Street, West Water Street, Hovey Street, Eichelberger Drive, Miami Street, North High Street, Washington Avenue, East Water Street, and North Jefferson Avenue where property owners have either opted for the city to complete this work or failed to complete this work themselves before the deadline.
Billing to each property owner will follow completion of this concrete work.
The City of Urbana will have a share of the costs for items like alleyways and curb ramps.
The total contract value for this project is $883,101.00.
Under a separate contract with the city for $167,869.00, D.L. Smith Concrete, LLC will also complete concrete improvements along East Market Street at the Urbana Municipal Building.
This project will remove and replace the existing concrete curb, sidewalk, and firehouse driveway apron along the south side of East Market Street, from South Main Street on the west to the public parking lot on the east.
The project completion date for the Municipal Building-East Market Concrete Improvements is on or before Friday, September 12, 2025.
On or around Monday, June 9, 2025, construction work is anticipated to start on the CHP-Urbana Bike Trail Safety Improvements (ODOT PID #115978).
This safety project is slated for two locations in the City of Urbana where the Simon Kenton Trail crosses North Main Street and Miami Street.
New signage, striping, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons will improve the existing trail crossing on Miami Street.
At the Simon Kenton trail crossing on North Main Street, Laurel Oak Street between North Main Street and Fyffe Street will be closed and removed, Fyffe Street will be realigned, and the trail crossing will be moved northward.
In addition, curb radii will be modified and signage, striping, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons will be installed.
This project is under contract with Park Enterprise Construction Company, Inc. for $735,021.00, with federal safety funding through ODOT being utilized for up to 90% of the eligible construction costs.
Completion of this bike trail crossing safety project is anticipated on or before Friday, August 29, 2025.
Finally, later this summer, the Ohio Department of Transportation, under a contract with the John R. Jurgensen Company, will resurface North Main Street between Washington Avenue and Gwynne Street to the northern corporate limits.
Under this contract, US Route 68 North from Urbana to the Champaign/Logan County line is also slated for resurfacing.
This resurfacing project has a completion date of October 15, 2025.
As part of this resurfacing project within the City of Urbana, safety-related improvements will be made to the striping layout and signage within the project corridor.
