Rogue yaks turn school into unexpected zoo

Indian Lake Schools had an unusual Monday that students—and teachers—won’t forget anytime soon.

Around lunchtime, sixth-grade teachers spotted some unexpected visitors grazing on the south end of Indian Lake Middle School near County Road 91.

They quickly alerted the ILMS office, which in turn called local authorities.

It didn’t take long for deputies to identify the culprits: five yaks that had escaped from Hidden Nook Ranch, about a mile away near Lewistown.

Officials temporarily closed the school exit and secured the area to keep both students and drivers safe.

When the owners arrived to retrieve their animals, the yaks weren’t in any hurry to leave.

Facilities directors Matt Hurley and Dustin Plikerd grabbed gates, and with some careful teamwork, the animals were finally guided back into their trailer.

Fortunately, no students were near the yaks during the adventure, and the situation was resolved without incident.

Fun fact: A group of yaks is typically called a herd—but depending on the context, it can also be referred to as a drove, gang, or trip.
