Friday night, shortly before midnight, police stopped a black Ford SUV on East Chillicothe Avenue at South Main Street after noticing the vehicle driving erratically.

According to reports released by the Bellefontaine Police Department, the SUV crossed the double-yellow line multiple times, made sudden lane changes, and failed to stop properly at intersections.

The driver, 71-year-old Paul A. Mathys, showed several signs of intoxication.

When asked to perform standard field sobriety tests, Mathys refused, saying he felt “okay” while mumbling and speaking incoherently at times.

He admitted to having “a beer” and appeared confused about his route home, driving south while saying he was heading north to Rushsylvania.

Mathys was arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI).

At the police station, he refused to provide breath or urine samples, stating he wanted to speak with an attorney.

He was cited and released to a sober driver.
