The Russells Point Police Department has officially welcomed its newest team member.

Officer Westly McVety was sworn in earlier this month and has already begun serving the village.

A native of Minster, McVety graduated from high school in 2013 and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantry Rifleman from 2013 to 2017.

During his military service, he also earned a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

After receiving an honorable discharge, McVety worked in a variety of roles, most recently with Airstream.

While employed there, he took steps to pursue a career in law enforcement by enrolling in the Wright State University (Lake Campus) Police Academy, where he completed an eight-month training program.

He graduated from the academy on April 9, 2025.

With the support of Mayor John Huffman and the Village Council, McVety was extended a conditional offer the following day.

He successfully completed the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission’s physical fitness and written exams before officially beginning duty on May 6th.

Since then, Officer McVety has been working through the department’s orientation process, which includes training in village geography, radio codes and signals, computer systems, report writing, and community engagement.

The department’s hiring process included two rounds of interviews, a mayoral interview, and a comprehensive background check, including reference checks with previous employers and personal contacts.

Officer McVety will continue with a field training program expected to last up to three months before receiving a permanent shift assignment.

The department looks forward to introducing Officer McVety to the community and is confident he will be a valuable asset to the Village of Russells Point.
