A late-night traffic stop by Russells Point Police on Thursday resulted in the arrest of two people on drug-related charges.

At approximately 10:18 p.m., officers patrolling the area of US Route 33 near Wilgus Drive saw a gold Buick sedan commit a traffic violation.

When officers activated their emergency lights in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle failed to stop immediately.

Instead, it continued eastbound on US 33 while the occupants were seen moving around and looking back at the patrol car.

The vehicle ultimately came to a stop in the 100 block of Sunnyside Avenue.

Officers spoke with the driver, William Hayes, 40, of Springfield, who showed signs of impairment.

A records check also showed that Hayes did not have a valid driver’s license.

Hayes denied any illegal activity but consented to a search of his vehicle.

During the search, officers discovered a yellow plastic duck with a straw coming out of the top, containing a white powdery substance.

They also found several pieces of a white, crystal-like material, which field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Hayes and his passenger, Sunny Parson, 42, also of Springfield, were arrested and charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Both were transported to the Logan County Jail without incident.
