The Bellefontaine Exchange Club has announced plans to sponsor its 65th Annual Safety Town Program, continuing a long-running effort to help keep young children safe.
The first Safety Town was held in 1962 after a local parent requested the program following the death of their son while crossing the street.
Tim Notestine, Safety Town chairman and a graduate of that very first class, says the program is designed for pre-school-aged children and focuses on practical, age-appropriate safety lessons.
Topics include pedestrian safety, traffic lights and signs, fire safety, good and bad touching, stranger awareness, not getting into cars with strangers, and basic drug safety.
Instruction is provided by trained officers from the Bellefontaine Police Department and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, with additional help from township officers and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Lessons are taught using films, short lectures, coloring books, and hands-on activities with traffic signs and signals, with special emphasis on vehicle and school bus safety.
All classes will be held at Bellefontaine Elementary School, located at 1101 Ludlow Road. Each session lasts about two hours and runs Monday through Friday, with 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. options available.
Parents may attend with their children if they wish, and should let instructors know when signing their child in each day.
