Logan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a reckless driver on State Route 117 north of Huntsville last week.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies saw Thomas Schaeffer, 41, of Aurora, walking away from the car that matched the description of the suspect vehicle. The car had gone off the roadway and into a ditch.
When deputies turned around to conduct the stop, they saw a female get out of a black truck that had stopped and attempt to get into the driver’s seat of the car while Scheaffer walked toward the truck.
The female, later identified as Scheaffer’s mother, told deputies she was having trouble with her car. Deputies told her they saw Scheaffer exiting the vehicle and that she needed to stop lying to them. She admitted he was her son and he was driving the car.
When deputies approached Scheaffer in the truck, he showed signs of heavy intoxication. When exiting the truck, Scheaffer was unable to support himself and lost his balance several times.
Scheaffer was taken to Bellefontaine Police Department for testing, to which he refused both field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer.
He was cited for OVI, reckless operation of a vehicle, and marked lanes violation.
Scheaffer was released into his parent’s custody.
