The Second Harvest Food Bank has announced that a vital food shipment, funded by the federal government, has been canceled.
The shipment, which was supposed to arrive between May and August, would have included essential items like chicken, pork, milk, eggs, cereal, and turkey breast.
This news comes at a tough time, as summer is quickly approaching.
With many students losing access to free or reduced-price school meals, there’s still uncertainty about summer food programs.
The food bank said this cancellation will mean over 350,000 fewer families will be served in the region.
To make matters worse, the Local Food Purchase Assistance program is being permanently canceled, which the food bank described as a “huge blow.”
With these cuts, the food bank faces a serious challenge in meeting the needs of families in the area.
The food bank is asking for support from the community and local leaders to help fill the gap and ensure families get the food they need.
