Firefighters responded just after midnight Wednesday to a working fire at Weidmann Electrical Technology, located at 700 West Court Street in Urbana.

According to the Urbana Fire Division, the initial alarm was triggered by the company’s system shortly after 12:00 a.m., prompting a rapid response. Crews arrived within minutes, finding employees safely evacuating the facility. Firefighters soon reported smoke and a possible explosion inside the building, prompting the declaration of a working fire.

Mutual aid was requested, with Jefferson Township–Springfield and West Liberty fire departments assisting on the scene. Crews had water on the fire by 12:17 a.m., and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters returned around 4 a.m. after another alarm was triggered but found the situation under control.

In a statement released later Wednesday, Weidmann Electrical Technology confirmed the fire originated from equipment failure in an isolated production area. The company said the building was evacuated quickly and credited the Urbana Fire Department for its swift response.

“We are extremely grateful for the fast and professional response of the Urbana Fire Department and for the calm, safe actions taken by our employees. Safety remains our top priority, and we are focused on restoring full operations with minimal disruption.”

– Michael Londo, Plant General Manager

The company said damage was limited to a single production department, and a restoration plan is underway to return to full operational readiness. The facility has since been cleared to reopen.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, which comes just two days after a massive blaze in Urbana’s downtown, where flames tore through multiple buildings in the 300 block of West Court Street.

Cleanup and recovery efforts continue across the affected areas as local officials work to determine whether the incidents are connected.
