UPDATE: Serious injury crash in downtown Bellefontaine

UPDATE:

A North Lewisburg man was hospitalized Saturday afternoon after a medical emergency caused a multi-vehicle crash in downtown Bellefontaine.

According to police, 57-year-old Robert Huffman was driving near South Main Street and Columbus Avenue when he suffered a medical episode and unintentionally accelerated.

Huffman’s vehicle struck seven unoccupied parked cars in front of 112 and 116 South Main Street, finally coming to rest just west of Court Avenue.

The vehicles included:

  • A 2015 Mazda Mazda3, owned by Gabriella Valerius of Hilliard

  • A 2024 Chevrolet Trax, owned by Bonita Burch of Springfield

  • A 2018 Honda Odyssey, owned by Randi Baur of Miamisburg

  • A 2014 Hyundai Accent, owned by Laura Henry of Urbana

  • A 2017 Cadillac XTS, owned by Melody Gatchel of Bellefontaine

  • A 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, owned by Montgomery Siler of New Carlisle

  • A 2022 Mazda CX-9, owned by Jeanne Perry of Rittman

Huffman’s passengers, 55-year-old Darla Smotherman of West Mansfield and a 4-year-old boy, were not injured.

Huffman was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital by Bellefontaine Fire and EMS for treatment related to his medical condition.

According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, a serious injury crash occurred in front of the Logan County Courthouse in downtown Bellefontaine shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators believe the male driver of a Ford pickup suffered a medical emergency, causing his vehicle to accelerate and strike seven other vehicles.

Two of those vehicles were pushed into downtown buildings.

An adult passenger and a minor passenger were also in the Ford pickup.

They are believed to be uninjured.

No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
