Thursday, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office finished up its latest Corrections Basic Academy, a program unique to the department and one that not many agencies have the ability to host in-house.

The academy, which ran from August 4 through August 28, is taught almost entirely by five certified instructors within the Sheriff’s Office: Tim Klingelhofer, Joe Torsell, Adam Niederkohr, Drew Dixon, Shawn McIntire, and the Sheriff’s Office staff.

The only outside instruction comes from a local attorney who teaches the legal portion.

The month-long training ran Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., covering roughly 140 hours of coursework and hands-on exercises.

This session’s class included three corrections officers from Logan County, along with officers from Auglaize County, Tri-County, and Mercer County.

In past years, the program has also trained officers from Shelby, Wyandot, Darke, and Multi-County jails.

State standards require all corrections officers to complete the academy within their first year of service.

Hosting the academy in-house helps ensure new officers receive practical training close to home.

Officials said running two academies a year is the goal, but it can be challenging for staff since instructors must balance teaching with their regular duties.

Next up for the class is to pass the written test within the next four weeks and get a score of 70 or above to receive certification.
