A traffic stop early Saturday morning led to the arrest of a man for operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI) and driving under suspension, among other charges.

At 12:43 a.m., Bellefontaine Police officers saw a silver Chrysler Pacifica traveling westbound on U.S. 33 at 86 mph in a 70 mph zone.

The vehicle exited the highway at OH-540, where officers initiated a traffic stop.

The driver, identified as 43-year-old Gregory Haemmerle, of Springfield, showed several signs of impairment.

Officers reported the odor of alcoholic beverages coming from the vehicle and from Haemmerle himself.

Although he initially denied drinking and claimed to be diabetic, he refused to take field sobriety tests and requested a blood test instead of a breathalyzer.

A check of Haemmerle’s license revealed it had expired and that he was driving under a court-ordered suspension.

Officers placed him under arrest and transported him to the Bellefontaine Police Department, where he continued to refuse a breath test.

He was then taken to Mary Rutan Hospital for the requested blood test, but refused to provide a sample.

Haemmerle was returned to the police department and later transported to the Logan County Jail.

He faces multiple charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, driving under suspension, and speeding.
