A Springfield man is facing a felony charge after police say he assaulted another person with a firearm in Urbana on Friday afternoon.

According to the Urbana Police Division, officers were dispatched around 2:49 p.m. to the 200 block of Pindar Street after a 911 caller reported being assaulted. The caller told dispatchers he had been struck in the head with a firearm and identified 24-year-old Zevion Edwards as the suspect. Police say Edwards left the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived.

Urbana officers began an immediate search and investigation to locate Edwards. With assistance from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the Springfield Police Division, and Wittenberg Campus Security, authorities were able to locate the vehicle and Edwards in the 1100 block of North Plum Street in Springfield.

Edwards was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Tri-County Regional Jail.

He has been charged with Felonious Assault, a second-degree felony. If convicted, Edwards could face a potential prison sentence ranging from eight to twelve years and a possible fine of up to $15,000.

Edwards is scheduled to be arraigned in Champaign County Municipal Court on Monday, March 16. The case will be referred to Champaign County Prosecutor Kevin Talebi for review.

Police say no further information will be released at this time.
