A Springfield man was taken into custody and charged with an OVI Saturday evening after crashing his vehicle in a cornfield southeast of Urbana.

Twenty-five year old James Dunn was spotted driving his 2016 Chevy Silverado in a ditch off State Route 54 around 7:30 p.m.

Deputies activated their overhead lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over. The truck then left the ditch and continued eastbound on State Route 54 while passing and driving in the wrong lane. This prompted deputies to call off the initial pursuit due to safety.

The same vehicle was found by law enforcement in a cornfield at the intersection of Pigsah Road and Three Mile Road after the driver failed to make a northbound turn.

As deputies approached the vehicle, they noticed a female standing beside the truck. Deputies cleared the vehicle, finding that the driver had fled from the scene, but located a loaded gun in the driver’s side door.

Deputies located Dunn further north in the field and he was taken into custody. He was charged with an OVI and released to a sober driver.
