Earlier this week, a Springfield man pleaded guilty to reduced and related charges stemming from a firearm assault in Urbana earlier this year.
According to court records, 24-year-old Zevion Edwards pleaded guilty Tuesday in Champaign County Common Pleas Court to an amended charge of attempted felonious assault, a third-degree felony, and improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony.
The charges stem from a March incident in the 200 block of Pindar Street, where police responded to a report of a person who had allegedly been struck in the head with a firearm. Authorities said Edwards left the area before officers arrived but was later located and taken into custody in Springfield. Prosecutors originally charged him with second-degree felony felonious assault.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to dismiss two firearm specifications attached to the original felonious assault charge, as well as an additional felony count and another charge included in the indictment.
Under the agreement, a Glock 19 Gen 5 handgun, two magazines and ammunition will be forfeited to the Urbana Police Division.
The court ordered a presentence investigation, and Edwards is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. in Champaign County Common Pleas Court.
Edwards remains in custody after the court ordered his bond to remain revoked until sentencing.
