A Springfield man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation Wednesday night following a reported domestic disturbance that led to a standoff with law enforcement on South Springfield Street in St. Paris.

According to information provided by Champaign County authorities, deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at approximately 9:43 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, to a residence in the 200 block of South Springfield Street for a reported domestic situation involving Alexander Roberts, 34, of Springfield.

Deputies were informed that Roberts was intoxicated and damaging items inside the residence, and there was concern that a handgun may have been present. Upon arrival, deputies cleared the upstairs portion of the home and located Roberts hiding under a bed.

A standoff developed as deputies disengaged and continued communication from a stairwell after Roberts made statements indicating he might harm himself. Authorities say he initially refused to come downstairs and requested time to think. Additional units were called to the scene as deputies worked to de-escalate the situation.

After continued efforts, Roberts eventually calmed down, became cooperative, and was taken into custody without incident. He was then escorted to an awaiting ambulance and transported to Urbana Mercy Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Roberts was charged with inducing panic. No injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
