According to the Ohio Department of Health, the toughest time of year to stay healthy is upon us.

This is a season of sweet treats, a lot of food options, and let’s be honest, stress.

It’s important to keep your health top of mind, everything from the food you’re eating, to the movement you’re getting.

And knowing when you may need to take a break for your mental health.

These tips may help you stay healthy and eat balanced meals, so you feel your best all season long!

  1. Keep healthy options visible. Instead of the traditional candy bowl, keep fresh fruit, veggies, and plain nuts within reach to keep you fueled and energized throughout the day.
  2. Bring a healthy dish to a holiday party. Get creative this holiday season. Move away from pre-prepackaged foods and ready-made dishes. Create dishes that incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains that will add extra colors, and nutrients, and will make your dish the talk of the party.
  3. Keep stress at a minimum. Incorporate stress reduction methods like yoga, meditation, walking, or strength training. Practice deep breathing for a minute each day.
  4. Indulge in a favorite. Don’t feel guilty. It’s okay to indulge once and a while. Permit yourself to enjoy your tried-and-true favorites.
  5. Eat mindfully. Slow down, enjoy the company of friends and family, and savor every bite of food!
  6. Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals to save calories for later can lead to overeating. Eat healthy balanced meals and snacks throughout the day so you’re not too hungry on the way to the dinner party.
  7. Drink plenty of fluids – and mostly water. During the busy holiday season, sometimes thirst takes a back seat. Drink a large glass of water to start the day and hydrate between every meal to stay energized.
  8. Be prepared. Check the restaurant menu before going out to eat. Choose grilled or baked protein options and opt for salads to get more veggies. Go light on sauces and dips.
  9. Make yourself the priority. Always remind yourself of the importance of eating healthy and staying physically active. Give your body the gift of good health.
