Louie Vito is a Bellefontaine native who rose to the highest levels of professional snowboarding, competing on the world’s biggest stages, including the X Games, Dew Tour, U.S. Grand Prix, and the Olympic Games.
Vito was born in Columbus and raised in Bellefontaine.
As a teenager, he moved to Vermont to attend Stratton Mountain School, a ski and snowboarding academy, where he trained on the slopes in the mornings and attended classes in the afternoons while traveling nationally and internationally for competition.
He gained international attention at age 17 after landing a backside 1080 at the Australian Open Snowboarding Championships, becoming the first rider to successfully complete the trick in Australian competition.
The performance helped secure his first of two consecutive championships at the event.
Over his career, Vito earned four U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix Overall Championships, two Dew Tour Overall Championships, and six Winter X Games medals.
He also recorded numerous podium finishes at Grand Prix, Dew Tour, World Cup, and international events.
Vito represented the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, finishing fifth in the halfpipe.
In 2022, he returned to Olympic competition, representing Italy in the halfpipe at the Winter Games in Beijing.
Outside of competition, Vito appeared on Season 9 of Dancing With the Stars in 2009 while training for the Vancouver Olympics and later competed on The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros.
Vito’s competitive résumé is extensive, but his story is not finished.
He joined News Director, April King, on Sunday for Listen Up! on WPKO to talk about where he is now and what’s up next:
