Thursday night is Trick-or-Treat in Logan County.
Bellefontaine Police and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office are reminding residents to be careful while trick-or-treating.
Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on a normal day, and nearly half of all fatal crashes on Halloween involve alcohol.
“Halloween can be fun for kids, but it also brings extra dangers,” said Bellefontaine Police Chief Chris Marlow. “It’s darker earlier, lots of people will be out, and the kids are excited. It’s important for families to make sure kids are easy to see, use crosswalks, and stick to familiar areas.”
Other tips include:
- Always cross at corners, look for cars, and keep phones or devices put away while walking
- Children under 12 should be with an adult, and older kids should stay on well-lit streets they know
- Using reflective clothing and a flashlight or glow stick can help drivers see kids
- Costumes should fit properly, and masks shouldn’t block vision
- Parents should check the candy to make sure it’s sealed and safe to eat
- Drivers should slow down in neighborhoods, turn headlights on early, and avoid using phones
“Being aware and prepared is important,” said Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds. “Everyone can help make trick-or-treat a safe and fun night.”
Both agencies say they will have extra patrols around Logan County, especially during trick-or-treat, which is from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
