Cara Rigsbee, Director of Development and Philanthropy for the United Way of Clark, Madison and Champaign Counties, spoke to the Urbana Lions Club on Wednesday afternoon about the organization’s role in the community and the services available to local residents.
Rigsbee explained that United Way serves as a convener of local agencies, helping connect organizations and resources to address needs throughout the community.
Part of Rigsbee’s role is working with area businesses and donors to better understand where they would like their contributions to go and what issues they want to support.
She also highlighted several programs affiliated with United Way, including Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio.
Through the program, children from birth through age five can receive a free book delivered to their home every month. The books are selected based on the child’s age and are designed to encourage reading, build vocabulary and help prepare children for kindergarten.
Parents can sign up for the program through the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio website.
Rigsbee also discussed United Way’s 2-1-1 service, which provides information and referral assistance to people looking for help in their communities.
By dialing 2-1-1, callers can be connected with agencies and organizations that provide assistance with areas including food, shelter, medical and counseling services, emergency assistance, employment, senior services, energy assistance, legal help, transportation and drug and alcohol services.
Rigsbee provided additional information about both programs during her presentation, with informational pamphlets also available.
The United Way of Clark, Madison and Champaign Counties works with community organizations, businesses and individuals to connect resources with local needs throughout the three-county area.
