The Urbana City Council met in a regular meeting Tuesday night.
The board of control passed the following:
- Increase blanket purchase order number, 2024-00359 to Cherokee Run Landfill of $10,000 for sludge disposal. The purchase order was approved for $50,000 by the board of control earlier this year. The expense will be charged to the Sewer Fund and is in the 2024 budget.
In old business, a third reading was passed:
- Ordinance 4429-24: Adopting the tax budget of the City of Urbana for the fiscal year beginning January 1, 2025; submitting the same to the County Auditor.
Moving forward into new business, some first readings were passed:
- Ordinance 4608-24: Vacate unimproved Richmond Street beginning at its intersection with Railroad Street and legally described within the description and detailed within the plat submitted to supplement the original petition filed by Bryan Hunt, legal counsel and authorized representative for the petitioner.
- Ordinance 4609-24: Approve and adopt the Urbana North Main Street Corridor Plan as an official planning guide for the City of Urbana.
In miscellaneous business, Chief Matthew D. Lingrell, from the Urbana Police Division, spoke about the Police Academy that will take place this fall.
This year marks two years of the Police Academy, Chief Lingrell and his team enjoy this outreach and encourage citizens to participate.

Next, Urbana Fire Chief, Dean Ortlieb, gave safety tips to the council as July 4th is quickly approaching:
Lastly, Mayor Bean gave an update on what is happening over the next few days in Urbana.
Starting on Thursday, July 4th, is the 26th Annual Champaign Cruisers Firecracker Car, Truck, and Bike Show.
Over 70 trophies are given out at the show and the entry fee is $10 to enjoy food, music, and great vehicles.
Find this event at the Urbana Airport on 1636 North Main Street in Urbana from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Also on the 4th, the Urbana Rotary Club is holding a Chicken BBQ Dinner from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the Urbana Airport.

Saturday, July 6th, the Fireworks Festival at Grimes Field event will be filled with fun, food, music, and fireworks kicking off at dusk.
Fireworks this year are provided by the Rotary Club of Urbana and its Community Members.
Looking into the future, on July 13th, Urbana is holding an Art Affair on the Square with Live Muralist.
This event is from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on the 1st Block of West Court Street in Downtown Urbana.
While you watch the art on the 13th, be sure to stop by downtown shops as they have their Second Saturday from noon to 6:00 PM.
There will be food vendors, live entertainment, a kid zone, and so much more throughout Downtown Urbana Square, don’t miss it!

The council will hold its next meeting on July 16th at 6:00 PM, in the training room on the third floor of the Urbana Municipal Building.
