Urbana City Council meets in executive session

The Urbana City Council met on Tuesday to discuss ordinances that would establish the pay and benefits of the city’s fire and police chiefs.

During the meeting, Councilman Stephanie Truelove asked how the pay ranges were set within the ordinances.

The query solicited a response from City Administrator Kerry Brugger.

 

They listened to and read the second reading of the following ordinances:

  • Ordinance 4397-25: An ordinance establishing the salary and benefits for the Fire Chief for the City of Urbana. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4398-25: An ordinance establishing the salary and benefits for the Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Urbana. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4399-25: An ordinance establishing the salary and benefits for the Central Staff Employees of the City of Urbana. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4400-25: An ordinance establishing the salary and benefits for the Police Chief of the City of Urbana. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4401-25: An ordinance establishing the salary and benefits for the Police Lieutenant of the City of Urbana. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4405-25: An ordinance fixing salary and other benefits for the Director of Administration. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4406-25: An ordinance fixing salary and other benefits for the Director of Finance. (Three readings required)
  • Ordinance 4407-25: An ordinance fixing salary and other benefits for the Director of Law. (Three readings required)

No ordinances were passed during the meeting.

The 2024 Court Reports for Champaign County were also presented to the Council.

In the Champaign County Municipal Court 2024 Report, there were 581 cases with 870 violations of misdemeanor criminal offenses.

There were 89 cases with 235 violations of new felony cases filed, but there were no jury trials in 2024.

In the Traffic Division 2024 Report, there were 2,546 cases with 3,084 violations of traffic offenses filed in the Champaign County Municipal Court in 2024.

There were a total of 123 cases of OVI involving 286 violations in 2024, and the Champaign County Municipal Court processed a total of 11 parking tickets in 2024.

Before adjourning for the night, the council entered into an executive session to discuss the possibility of increasing the pay of the Council Clerk as prompted in January by the council.

The council will meet again on Tuesday, February 18, to vote on the ordinances discussed.
