Urbana City Council met with data center questions

The Urbana City Council met in regular session Tuesday evening, with discussion surrounding a potential data center once again drawing public attention and raising questions about transparency in the city’s review process, despite the issue not being listed on the meeting’s official agenda.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, a resident spoke about concerns regarding a perceived lack of transparency related to the possible development.

Second Ward Councilman Cledis Scott later responded by explaining how the approval process could unfold, noting that if the city’s Planning Commission were to approve a project and the developer does not request a tax abatement or other incentive, the matter would not come before council for a formal vote.

Scott encouraged residents to share their opinions directly with the Planning Commission, emphasizing its role in the review process.

First Ward Councilwoman Amy Jumper added to the discussion, echoing concerns about transparency. Jumper said she had previously requested changes to the wording of an ordinance passed in December, specifically asking that the term “mega project” be removed, but that request was denied.

Mayor Bill Bean also addressed the issue, stating that no definitive plans regarding a data center have been discussed at this time.

The council took action on several items.

Council approved a recommendation from the Board of Control authorizing a $174,415 purchase order to Butler, Fairman & Seufert Inc. for engineering services tied to a proposed FAA project at the Urbana Grimes Airport. The work includes design, permitting, bidding, and construction-related services for a new taxi lane and a six-unit T-hangar building, with costs charged to the FAA Grants Fund.

Additionally, council approved an emergency resolution declaring the necessity of constructing sidewalks, curbs, and/or gutters along portions of several city streets, including Bon Air Drive, Camelot Drive, Pine Tree Drive, Cambridge Drive, New Haven Drive, Parkway Boulevard, Players Circle, Bentwood Court, Pro Circle, and South Jefferson Street.

Mayor Bean provides additional comments on the airport project and about the latest on the campus of Urbana University.
