The Urbana City School District Board of Education met in a regular meeting on Wednesday evening at the Urbana Elementary and Junior High Complex.

During the meeting, board members recognized Dr. Julie Willoughby, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as this year’s recipient of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators’ Outstanding Central Office Administrator Award.

In addition, they heard from Nathan Sever about the Urbana High School Career Pathways program that was instituted this year in the schools. District Superintendent Charles Thiel is encouraged about the good the program brings to Urabana’s students.

Also announced during the board meeting was a nomination made by US Senator Bernie Moreno to invite the Urbana High School Marching Band to represent the state of Ohio during next year’s Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

Three school trips were approved by board members. They include the high school’s French Club making a trip to Paris, France in June 2026, the high school FFA traveling to Dublin, Ireland in June 2027, and the annual FFA trip to Camp Muskingum June 23-27, 2025.

Several donations were accepted by the board, including a donation of more than $11,000 to the Urbana Football Team from Women of the Moose and the Urbana Athletic Boosters.

What took a majority of the time, however, was a discussion of how the state budget would impact the district’s ability to teach our children. Boardmember Taylor Armstrong says things are about to change drastically in the District.

The Board of Education will meet again on Tuesday, May 20, to discuss end-of-year activities and begin planning for the next school year.
