The City of Urbana has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA, earning the distinction for the 24th consecutive year through the Arbor Day Foundation. The recognition highlights Urbana’s long-standing commitment to preserving and expanding its urban forest while promoting environmental stewardship throughout the community.
City officials attended the Central Ohio Tree City USA awards ceremony earlier this month, hosted by the City of Springfield at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts Center. Awards were presented by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation.

The Tree City USA program recognizes communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to urban forestry and the care of public trees. To qualify, communities must meet four core standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation. Urbana maintains an active tree board or department, has a community tree ordinance in place, invests at least $2 per capita annually into forestry and tree maintenance efforts, and celebrates Arbor Day each year with educational and community-focused activities.
City leaders say the continued recognition reflects the dedication of city staff, volunteers, and residents who work together to maintain Urbana’s parks, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Trees provide numerous benefits to the community, including improved air quality, reduced stormwater runoff, energy savings, wildlife habitat, and enhanced beauty throughout the city.
Ohio continues to lead the nation in the number of Tree City USA communities for the 48th consecutive year, further underscoring the state’s emphasis on conservation and community forestry. This year, 41 Central Ohio communities received the designation, along with five universities and schools recognized as Tree Campuses for their commitment to sustainable campus forestry practices.
For Urbana, the milestone represents more than just an award — it reflects nearly a quarter-century of ongoing investment in creating a healthier, greener, and more vibrant community for future generations.
