A Urbana man was arrested on operating a vehicle impaired (OVI) charges Thursday night after police responded to a report of a reckless driver on North Main Street.

According to a report from the Urbana Police Division, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:32 p.m. on February 6 to the 1100 block of North Main Street after a caller reported a yellow Jeep driving erratically. The caller reported the vehicle was unable to maintain its lane, traveled into oncoming traffic, and nearly caused a head-on collision.

Officers located the vehicle a short time later, traveling southbound in the 300 block of North Main Street and observed it partially crossing the center line. A traffic stop was initiated, and the vehicle eventually pulled over in the 100 block of South Main Street.

The driver was identified as Bruce Simon. Officers reported that Simon admitted to drinking earlier in the evening and showed signs of impairment, including glassy eyes and slow speech.

Simon agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, during which officers noted multiple indicators of impairment. A portable breath test later showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.116.

Simon was taken into custody and transported to the Urbana Police Division, where he submitted to an evidential breath test. The result showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.188, more than twice the legal limit.

Simon’s vehicle was secured at the scene, and his dog, which was inside the vehicle, was transported to the animal pound by another officer. Simon was later taken to the Tri-County Jail.

Simon was charged with operating a vehicle impaired and a marked lane violation.
