A 49-year-old Urbana man faces a domestic violence charge following an alleged altercation Thursday night, October 8, at a residence in the 400 block of East Water Street.

According to the Urbana Police Division report, officers were dispatched to the residence at approximately 10:40 p.m. after receiving a report that the victim had been thrown to the ground during a dispute.

The victim told officers that a man had caught the victim looking through his phone and attempted to take it back. The victim alleged that the man grabbed the victim by the arms and threw the victim to the ground before taking the phone.

The victim reported pain in the back and right foot following the incident and told officers the victim wanted to press charges.

Police later located James Williams at a residence in the 800 block of West Church Street. Williams told officers he had chased the victim to retrieve his phone and acknowledged grabbing the victim, saying the victim ended up on the ground.

Williams denied throwing the victim to the ground with full force and disputed the claim that he got on top of the victim during the incident.

Williams was arrested and charged with domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Williams pleaded not guilty during an arraignment on October 9. The court appointed an attorney and granted bond with conditions, including no contact with the victim. A temporary protection order was also granted against the victim.

Williams is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing on November 9 at 11 a.m.
