A 14-year-old student at Urbana High School is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly creating and distributing digitally altered images of classmates. Authorities say the manipulated photos made it appear as though at least 24 students were nude, though none of the images were real.

Prosecutors say the teen used artificial intelligence to modify common photos, a practice that is now explicitly addressed under a recent Ohio law change that took effect in September 2025. Each manipulated photo is being treated as a separate felony, reflecting the seriousness of the offense. Without the new law, these actions may have been considered misdemeanors.

The case is currently under review in Champaign County’s juvenile court. Prosecutors emphasize the serious impact this type of digital exploitation can have on victims and stress that the legal system is responding accordingly.

Urbana City Schools Superintendent Charles Thiel confirmed that the student has faced disciplinary measures and will no longer be attending Urbana High School. The student is expected to transfer to another district, reflecting the school’s commitment to protecting students while addressing the situation responsibly.

Authorities have scheduled a hearing for Friday, May 8, at the Champaign County Municipal Court.

The case highlights the challenges schools and law enforcement face in responding to new forms of digital misconduct, including the misuse of artificial intelligence to harass or exploit others.

Officials say this case serves as a reminder for parents, students, and educators to remain vigilant about technology use, while emphasizing the legal consequences of manipulating and distributing explicit content, even when it is digitally fabricated.
