A woman was flown to a Dayton-area hospital after being hit by a vehicle while riding a mobility scooter in Bellefontaine Monday evening.
According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, officers were called to the intersection of South Main Street and Washington Avenue around 7:15 p.m.
Officers found Janet Burgess, 44, of Bellefontaine, on the ground with her mobility scooter nearby.
Burgess told police she was crossing the crosswalk from Wendy’s toward Washington Avenue when she was hit by a vehicle.
She complained of back pain.
Bellefontaine EMS responded and treated Burgess at the scene before she was flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital.
The driver, identified as Jose Trevino, 57, of Bellefontaine, told officers he was traveling north on South Main Street when he saw Burgess crossing the street on her scooter.
Trevino said he applied his brakes and attempted to avoid hitting her.
He estimated he was traveling between 20 and 25 miles per hour at the time of impact.
Two witnesses also provided statements to police.
Both described the vehicle attempting to avoid Burgess before striking the rear of the mobility scooter and knocking her to the ground.
One witness reported that the pedestrian crossing signal was red at the time of the crash.
Police noticed damage to the front right of Trevino’s Cadillac SUV.
The vehicle was towed from the scene after it began leaking fluid.
No citations have been issued, and the crash remains under investigation by the Bellefontaine Police Department.
