In 1938, a Congressional Act was approved making November 11 a legal holiday: “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day"” to honor those who faced the enemy in World War I.

After World War II came to a close, it became important to recognize all veterans, not just those who fought in 1919.

Thus, in 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill changing the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

The holiday is to be celebrated every November 11 in honor of all men and women who served the United States in the military services.

Today, approximately 2,700 veterans call Logan County home.

There are several veteran organizations found here and all of them work closely with the Logan County Veterans Service Office to ensure all who have served are cared for.

A completely separate organization from Veterans Affairs, the VSO Office is there to help any and all veterans, spouses, and survivors with whatever challenges life brings them.

Amy Ricketts is the VSO Office Manager for Logan County.

She says unfortunately only 34 % of the vets in Logan County actually use VSO services.

It is important to note that any veterans in Logan County, regardless of their age or combat experience, are welcome to visit the Veterans Service Office or receive VSO services.
