After an impressive 31-year career, Assistant Chief Tom “TJ” Weikart Jr. will retire from the Bellefontaine Fire Department on September 18th, 2024.

Weikart began his service with the Bellefontaine Fire Department (BFD) as an Auxiliary member in August 1993, shortly after graduating from Bellefontaine High School.

He pursued further education at Hocking College, earning his Firefighter/EMTB certifications, followed by a summer role at Cedar Point in the Fire/EMS Division.

He returned to Hocking College to obtain his Paramedic certification before being hired full-time by BFD on March 27, 1995.

He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2004.

In an interview this week Weikart said:

Over his distinguished career, Weikart has earned multiple certifications, including Fire/EMS Instructor, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, CPR Instructor, Stop the Bleed Instructor, and TEMS Medic.

His expertise has been crucial in various projects, such as the specifications for the current Ambulance and Truck 21, turnout gear, and radios. He has also served as the EMS Coordinator, overseeing the drug license and EMS equipment.

In addition to his work with BFD, Weikart has been the TEMS commander for the Bellefontaine Police SRT, managing six other TEMS Medics and overseeing EMS operations.

He also serves as an Assistant Chief at the Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department, works part-time at Indian Lake EMS Joint Ambulance District, and is active with county Fire & EMS boards.

TJ’s commitment to the fire service extends through his family, with his son Robby joining BFD in 2020, making him the third generation of the Weikart family to serve with the department. His other son, Daniel, also serves in the fire service with Kenton Fire.

His service and contributions will be deeply missed.

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our community over the past 31 years!
