A man was arrested Thursday afternoon after a confrontation with deputies who were responding to a welfare check, according to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to a home in Lakeview to assist Adult Protective Services with concerns about an elderly woman who was reportedly not being properly cared for.

As deputies arrived, they were warned they could encounter issues with people at the residence.

According to the report, as one deputy approached the home, a man later identified as Stephen Griffin, 54, of Springfield, stopped him in the roadway and began questioning why law enforcement was there.

Deputies say Griffin became confrontational, using profanity and making hostile comments toward deputies.

During the interaction, Griffin reportedly claimed he did not like police and challenged deputies about being on the property.

As the situation continued, a deputy noticed Griffin had a handgun in his back pocket.

Deputies ordered Griffin to raise his hands multiple times, but he repeatedly failed to follow commands and continued moving around.

At one point, deputies say Griffin began aggressively walking toward a deputy.

A second deputy then assisted, and the two were able to take Griffin into custody and safely remove the firearm.

Authorities say Griffin had also been yelling at deputies inside the home before the confrontation and had been asked to leave.

While being transported to the Logan County Jail, he later apologized for his behavior.

Griffin was booked into the Logan County Jail on charges of obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
