The Village of West Liberty is looking to bring back the recycling program scrapped last year after two successful trial runs. According to a letter read by Council member Shannon Maier, the early trials saw 196 and 198 participants, respectively. Mayor Brad Hudson talks about the program:
Mayor Hudson also informed residents that it would be in their best interest to participate in the recycling program due to an increase in the cost of trash bags:
The council heard the first reading of the ordinance that would restart the program.
Lion’s Club representative Bob Harrison informed the council that the restroom project appears to have hit a snag. It was recently learned that the restroom would need to be built to comply with a 100-year Flood Plan due to its proximity to the river. To accommodate that plan, the floor would need to be built so it is out of that flood plan. According to Harrison, to be ADA-compliant, there will be approximately $20,000 in railing costs added to the project and at least that much for concrete work.
Village Fire Chief Darin Leach informed the council that his department did not receive the two FEMA grants that he applied for. As a result, the village will need to find funding to replace the Self-Contained Breathing Packs used by the department. Chief Leach said he would contact vendors in order to get quotes for replacing the packs.
In other council action, the purchase of a 2024 Ford police cruiser was authorized. The council voted to pay the $42,403 price in cash, a move that would save the village $17,000 in interest payments had they financed the purchase. Once the vehicle is purchased, it will not be outfitted for service until 2025.
Council Fiscal Officer Cindee Boyd told the council that the village would be switching software as the current vendor, UBMAX, was sold and is no longer affordable. The new software will be Government Accounting Solutions, Inc., and will be installed for use starting in January 2025.
